Duncan Myers Tool Fund
On Tuesday, May 18th, 2021, I learned of the passing of my friend, one of my mentors, and original Hollywood CPR board member, Duncan Myers.
Duncan was a force of positivity. He was a forever optimist. He was the type of person who would encourage your ideas rather than talk you out of them. He was always full of laughter, had a great sensibility, was kind, supportive, and loved to embolden others – myself included.
When I was getting Hollywood CPR off the ground, Duncan was there to reinforce my decision and support our burgeoning organization. He championed my ideas and belief-system. He was my friend and was Hollywood CPR’s friend from its conception until now.
Duncan was a prop maker and special effects professional who worked on such classics as Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist and The NeverEnding Story.
When I was starting out in the entertainment industry, all I had was a brand-new tool bag full of mostly new tools. Right before I was about to go off onto a project, I saw Duncan. He took one look at my tools, asked if he could see them, and promptly threw them onto the ground and stomped on them. He then gifted me from his own kit a few tools that had been broken in by his years in the industry. He was worried that if I arrived on set with a brand-new tool bag full of shiny, unused tools, that I’d get picked on by my crew. He wanted to make sure that I fit in on my first day. This moment is one that I’ve always remembered fondly and in honor of what Duncan did for me when I was new to the industry, I’d like to pass it forward.
In his name, Hollywood CPR is creating a fund to help our students who might not have the access, money, or support to buy the tools that they’ll need to do their job and gain confidence in the careers they’re about begin.
This is what Duncan was able to do for me. He was an inspirational guide who helped me in my early career. Giving a helping hand to those most in need was a big part of who Duncan was as a human and he always gravitated toward supporting the underdog. Please consider donating to the Duncan Myers Tools Fund to help the next generation of new artists, craftspersons and technicians in need get some of the necessary resources and support as they embark on their future careers.
Duncan is survived by the love of his life Michelle and his family.
